Causes of poor packaging of the genetic material in the sperm cells
Where the DFI value is above 15, we recommend subjecting the cause to further elucidation. This should take place in cooperation with your GP or a fertility specialist. Perhaps this will lead to the identification of treatable causes. It will, however, be a minimum of three months before any change can be detected, as this is the time required for the development of new sperm cells. The good news is that if the DFI value is improved by just 5-10%, this will increase your chances of having a child - regardless of the fertility-treatment chosen. It is therefore important that you look into the causes – right from the beginning. In this document you can read about some of the known causes of men’s increased DFI values. We further recommend that you discuss this with your GP or fertility specialist, since some causes will only be revealed by further examination.
The cause of increased DFI values will vary from one person to another and may well be attributed to various factors. Studying the list you may get an idea as to which factors could constitute the cause(s) in your case.
Factors influencing the genetic material in the sperm cell may for instance be:
- Age
- Smoking
- Obesity
- Nutrition
- Certain illnesses
- Certain types of medication
